1. Seek Medical Attention

If you have experienced sexual misconduct and/or sexual violence, we strongly encourage you to seek medical treatment. If you have been sexually assaulted, seek medical treatment and a SANE forensic exam.

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has received specialized training in forensic evidence collection and medical care of sexual assault victims. Along with the forensic exam, the SANE will provide medical care such as preventive medication for common sexually transmitted infections, disperse emergency contraception, as well as treat and document injuries.

It is important to preserve evidence when possible before going to the hospital. Evidence can be preserved by not showering/bathing, laundering your clothing or eating/drinking/brushing your teeth.
