Resources for Instructors

To support instructors in sharing important information with students, the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX) has developed classroom resources, including sample syllabus language and downloadable PowerPoint slides. These materials are designed to help communicate mandatory reporting information and available support measures resources in a clear and consistent manner.

Suggested Syllabus Language

Use the language below in your course syllabus to help students understand OCRTIX resources, reporting options, and mandatory reporting requirements. The text may be copied and pasted directly into your syllabus or adapted to fit your course and teaching style.

Mandatory Reporting to the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX)

One of my goals as your instructor is to create a safer, supportive, and developmental learning environment.  Accordingly, I want to acknowledge that as a university employee, I am a mandatory reporter. If you share information with me regarding incidents of harassment, discrimination, sexual misconduct, or related retaliation, I am required to then report that information to the Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX).

This applies to anything I observe or learn about within my role as an instructor, whether it comes up in a one-on-one conversation, a class discussion, or a written assignment. This includes information related to past events, regardless of when and where they occurred.

Please know that if I do need to make a report, OCRTIX will reach out to you privately via email. Their role is to invite you to a conversation for you to share more about what may have occurred and talk through options to resolve the situation. Options include supportive measures, informal resolution options, or formal processes. You have autonomy in deciding how you participate in the process and in informing OCRTIX on how to proceed.

You are welcome to contact OCRTIX directly to learn more about processes, support measures, or to file a report by visiting civilrights.ku.edu/how-report, emailing civilrights@ku.edu, or calling 785-864-6414.

Support for Pregnant & Parenting Students

If you are a pregnant or parenting student, you are entitled to receive the same access to school programs, activities, and educational opportunities under various federal laws, including Title IX.  The Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX) looks forward to working with you to determine your eligibility for various supports. Possible supports may include academic flexibility (examples include: additional excused absences for medical appointments, assignment extensions) and physical modifications (examples include: accessible desks, access to campus lactation rooms).

These protections extend to the classroom, labs, fieldwork, and student activities. To discuss eligibility and to explore reasonable modifications, please email civilrights@ku.edu.
