The Office of Civil Rights & Title IX (OCRTIX) congratulates Lauren Jones McKown, J.D., Associate Vice Chancellor for OCRTIX, and Kim Templeton, MD, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine and Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education at KU Medical Center, and orthopedic surgeon with The University of Kansas Health System, on the publication of their co-authored research article in the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS).

The article, “Assessment of Inappropriate Questions Asked by Program Directors and Faculty During Orthopaedic Residency Interviews,” was published as part of a multi-institutional research effort. The study, designed by Dr. Templeton, examined how well faculty members and residency program directors from across the country recognized appropriate and inappropriate interview topics from a list of hypothetical questions that could be used in the orthopedic surgery residency selection process. This work expanded upon prior studies that assessed frequency of inappropriate questions as noted by residency applicants and sought to better understand this phenomenon by identifying any gaps in knowledge among faculty who participate in interviews. Researchers found gaps in interviewers' knowledge and noted that regular training could help ensure more consistent interview practices. Lauren and Kim were among the study’s co-authors, contributing to research that explores impartiality and professionalism within graduate medical education.

OCRTIX is proud to recognize Lauren and Kim for this accomplishment and their contributions to research, education, and professional practice.
